To mark our fifth anniversary, Head Pastry Chef, Régis Beauregard has been given carteblanche for the new season afternoon tea, and indulgence is on the menu.
He has looked back through all the cakes that he and his team had lovingly baked over the past 5 years, and chosen the crème de la crème. The most popular cakes. The ones that always get a High Five.
The Balthazar High Five Afternoon Tea would not be complete without the inimitable scones, made of rich, creamy buttermilk yet surprisingly light, and served with Balthazar jams and Devonshire clotted cream. Or the mouth-watering homemade sandwich selection which includes lightly pickled cucumber, smoked salmon, coronation chicken and egg mayo… but our secret favourite has to be the succulent lobster prawn roll, oozing out of a squidgy brioche bun. And Régis’s cakes, which will leave you begging for more… The Gooseberry O’clock is a roulade of choux sponge infused with elderflower, homemade gooseberry compote and vanilla yogurt mousseline; The Balthazar Icon – a perfect copy of Balthazar’s instantly recognisable awning – a sacher made out of Valrhona chocolate guanaja and raspberry. Strawberries feature in The Queen of Tarts; The Union Macaroon is a salute to the red, white and blue in the American, French and British flags; and The Golden Bombe is a chocolate and hazelnut triumph, bearing an ornate sugar spun 5, perfectly befitting the occasion.
And if you decide to have a little something other than Postcard tea to lubricate the experience, silver fox Brian Silva, Bar Manager with a shrewd nose for what your tipple is, has created a High Five Fizz with Veuve Clicquot rosé Champagne, Pinky vodka, Cocchi Rosa Aperitivo Americano, crystalised rose petals and a citrus twist. At £29.50 per person without the cocktail or a glass of Champagne Gaston Chiquet, or £39.50 with, this is a steal… plus each guest will be given a homemade canelé bordelaisto take home. These magical confections, with hidden depths of rum and vanilla, are encased by a thin caramelised shell and are melt-in-the-mouth perfection.
In addition, for those who simply cannot resist temptation and are happy to part with a little more loot, there is an irresistible 30g tin of Imperial caviar, served with blinis and crème fraiche, to add to the mix.
BUT, there is one final thing that we’ve been keeping from you. The Balthazar High Five Afternoon Tea will be served on its stand through a haze of dry ice, so that when the glittering délices finally appear before your eyes, abracadabra-style, those that-way inclined will have plenty of time to prepare for their Instagram moment du jour; others will be able to marvel and then tuck in!
The Balthazar High Five Afternoon Tea will be served from 3pm to 5.30pm Monday to Friday; 3pm to 5pm on Saturday; and 3pm to 6.30pm on Sunday (3pm to 5pm Monday to Sunday in December). Prices start from £29.50 per person.
